Elementis plc was launched in 1998 as a result of the reorganisation and strategic focus on specialty chemicals by Harrisons and Crosfield plc.

2018

Elementis plc completes the sale of the Surfactants business located in Delden, The Netherlands to Kolb Distribution AG.

2017

Elementis Specialty Products increases the scale of its personal care business with the acquisition of SRLH Holdings Inc ("Summit Reheis"), a high quality, high margin specialty chemicals platform that produces a range of critical active ingredients and materials tailored for use in personal care, pharmaceutical and dental products.

 

2013

Elementis Specialty Products purchases the assets of Hi-Mar Specialty Chemicals, LLC. ("Hi-Mar”), a US coatings additives company. Hi-Mar is a leading supplier of defoamers to the coatings, construction and oilfield drilling industries, with manufacturing and technical facilities based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The acquisition of Hi-Mar will further expand the Company's product and technical service offering in these high value segments.

2012

Elementis Specialty Products acquires Watercryl Quimica Ltda ('Watercryl'), a leading supplier of additives to the Brazilian coatings industry, with manufacturing and technical facilities based in Palmital, São Paulo. The acquisition of Watercryl will significantly increase Elementis’s presence in Latin America and provide a platform for its Specialty Products business to accelerate growth in the region. 

2009

Elementis Specialty Products acquires Fancor, one of the largest North American suppliers of natural, bio-functional and active ingredients used in the cosmetics and personal care market.

2008

Elementis Specialty Products completes its acquisitions of Deuchem Co. Ltd, a key supplier of additives and resins to the coatings and related industries in Asia Pacific, based in Taiwan and China, and of Yu Hong, an organoclay business in China.

2007

Sale of Global Pigments business completed.

2005

Sale of Specialty Rubber business.

2004

Elementis Specialties acquisition of Sasol Servo B.V.

2002

Elementis Chromium acquisition of OxyChem’s chromium chemicals business, creating a single US producer.

1998

Exit from non core sectors – interests in food and agriculture sold, along with timber and building supplies.

1998

Chemical business acquisition – key specialty additive manufacturer Rheox, bought and integrated with Elementis Specialties.

1997

Return of capital – over £400 million returned to shareholders.

1970s

Major acquisitions followed from the 1970s onwards with the purchase of key chromium, pigments and specialties businesses.

1962

Harrisons and Crosfield had a majority shareholding in Durham Chemicals.

1947

Joint venture with Durham Chemicals, UK to manufacture and market chemicals in Canada.

1844

Harrisons and Crosfield is formed by two brothers, Daniel and Smith Harrison, and Joseph Crosfield to trade in tea and coffee. From here the company soon developed into a global trading and tropical plantations company with estates producing tea, coffee, timber, oil palm and rubber.
